Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

A message from MUSC President David J. Cole, M.D., FACS - January 15, 2021

Dear MUSC family,

In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s transformative impact on our nation, once more, we set aside the third Monday of January as a day of reflection, introspection and service to others. This year, we commemorate MLK Day on Monday, Jan. 18.

This year’s national theme is “Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On, Not a Day Off!” The double meaning is important: This day is so much more than a respite from the daily demands of work life – it’s an opportunity to engage with others as individuals, and as an institution, to reinforce positive and necessary societal change.

Our MUSC diversity, equity and inclusion teams across the enterprise and, in particular, team members in the Office of Student Programs and Student Diversity organized multiple opportunities for us to reflect on the existing challenges of today; learn ways that we can cultivate a diverse, inclusive and supportive campus; serve and advocate in our communities; and, of course, celebrate Dr. King's life and legacy.

Our commitment to supporting and being examples of equity, justice, respect and opportunity for the lives we touch has never been stronger. As always, thank you for taking the time to read this message today and for the way you live our shared values, strengthening each other, MUSC and the communities we serve.

Yours in service,
David J. Cole, M.D., FACS
MUSC President
